Things to do · Skiathos guide

Skiathos activities,
and things to skip.

Five guides to what a week on Skiathos actually holds: boat days, the walk to the monastery, where to eat, the Mamma Mia locations, and what the island is like with children or with one other person.

What do you actually do with a week on Skiathos?

Less than the lists suggest. Five guides here cover the shape of a week, an island for two, an island with children, the Mamma Mia locations across on Skopelos, and where to eat once you have driven into town.

If you want the single overview, start with things to do in Skiathos, which sets out a seven-day shape and says which things are worth building a day around and which are not.

If you already know roughly what you want and are looking for who runs it, the list of excursions sets out the nine kinds of thing you can book on the island, where each one leaves from, and what to ask before paying a deposit.

Why these
belong together.

A week on a small island can be filled or it can be spent. These five guides are about what to do with the days, including the days you decide to do nothing with.

They are written by people who live above the bay rather than by a tour desk, so they say when something is not worth the drive as readily as when it is. There is no restaurant, no bar and no pool at CORE, which means dinner is always a decision and always somewhere else — that shapes these guides more than any of them admits individually.

Two of the categories here suit the two ends of this list. The Signature Suite takes up to five, for the weeks that involve boats and beaches and a car; the Classic Suite takes two, for the weeks that do not. Both look at the same water, and both are a thirteen-minute drive from the old port, so the difference between them is how many of you are deciding where to eat.

Questions about what to do

Five questions about the days, before the guides go into detail.

What are the best things to do on Skiathos?

Four carry a week: the south-coast beaches, the old town and its museums, the abandoned medieval town of Kastro, and one day on the water — round to Lalaria by kaiki or across to Skopelos by ferry. The rest is better left loose.

How many days do you need?

Five to seven nights covers the four without hurrying. The roads are slow rather than difficult, so a plan that stacks two long drives on the same day is the one that spoils a week.

What is there to do when the wind gets up?

Go into town. Five museums sit within a few streets of the old port, each small enough to see properly in an hour. The wind that cancels the boat to Lalaria leaves the town entirely usable.

Is Skiathos good in the evening?

The town is where the evening happens, about 13 minutes away by car. There is no restaurant or bar at CORE, so dinner is always a decision and always somewhere else — plan for a driver or a taxi.

Who runs the excursions?

Not us. CORE operates nothing and takes no commission on anything. The excursions page sets out the nine kinds of thing you can book on the island and what to ask an operator before you pay a deposit.
