Practical · Skiathos guide

The practical half
of a week here.

Five practical guides to Skiathos: how to get here, walking up from the port, getting around without a bus, when to come, and the island measured in numbers.

What do you need to work out before you come?

Three things: how you are getting to the island, how you are getting around once you are on it, and when to come. Five guides here answer those, plus one that collects every number we can verify in a single page.

The short version. Fly, or sail from Volos, Mantoudi or Thessaloniki. Hire a car, because there is no bus on this side of the bay. Come between May and October, and September if you can choose.

Why these
belong together.

This is the half nobody writes about and everybody needs: how you get here, how you move once you have, and which month you should have booked instead.

Practical questions

Five questions to settle before you book anything.

How do you get to Skiathos?

By air into Skiathos International Airport, or by ferry. The shortest advertised crossings are about 40 minutes from Mantoudi on Evia, about 1 hour 10 from Volos and about 3 hours 10 from Thessaloniki in summer. Confirm sailings for your own dates.

Do you need a hire car?

Staying at CORE, effectively yes. The island bus runs from Skiathos Town along the south coast to Koukounaries and does not serve the Pounta side of the bay, so every journey from the house is a car or a taxi.

Where do you park on this side of the island?

Yes, free private parking on site and inside the gate, with no need to reserve a space. Book the hire car itself before you arrive in July and August: the island fleet is finite.

When should you come?

Between May and October. September is the month most people underrate — the sea is still warm and the first three weeks of August, which are the busiest, are behind you.

What time can you check in?

From 15:00, with arrivals taken until 23:30, and check-out by 11:00 with the door open from 07:00. The airport is about six minutes away, which makes an early flight far easier here than from the far side of the island.
