How do you get around Skiathos?
Three ways. The island bus, which runs from Skiathos Town along the south coast to Koukounaries. Taxis, which are plentiful in town and scarce at closing time. And a hire car, which is what most people staying outside town end up with.
The bus is run by a single island operator and covers one useful corridor: the south coast beaches, ending at Koukounaries, which the Municipality notes is the terminus. If your base is on that road, you can have a genuinely car-free week.
The island is about 50 square kilometres, so nothing is far. What is slow is the road: narrow, winding, and in places unsurfaced for the last stretch down to a beach.
Can you get around without a car if you stay at Core Luxury Suites?
Not comfortably. There is no bus service on the Pounta side of the bay, so every journey is a taxi. It works for a short stay with few plans; for a week with beaches in it, hire a car.
The arithmetic is straightforward. Two trips into town a day, plus a beach, is four to six taxi fares. Over six nights that passes the cost of a hire car, and the car also removes the wait at both ends. Four people in a Family Suite, which sleeps four, will pass that line by the third day.

Where does the Skiathos bus actually go?
From Skiathos Town along the south coast to Koukounaries, calling at the string of beaches on the way — Megali Ammos among them. It does not cross to the north coast, and it does not serve Pounta.
Megali Ammos is on the route and about a kilometre from town, which is why it is the default beach for anyone without a car. The Municipality lists access on foot, by car or by bus.
Timetables change with the season and are posted at the stops, at the ticket kiosks and by the operator. Check the current one rather than a figure in an article — including this one.
What is driving on Skiathos like?
Slow rather than difficult. The roads are narrow and winding, several beach approaches finish on dirt, and the real problem is parking in Skiathos Town between six and midnight in July and August.
- Book the car before you arrive in high season. The island fleet is finite.
- Check what the hire agreement says about unsurfaced roads; several beaches are reached down one.
- Park at the edge of town and walk in. It is faster than circling, and the town is fifteen minutes across on foot.
- Scooters and quads are common and are involved in most of the island's summer accidents. Consider that honestly.
Is the water a way of getting around?
Genuinely, yes. Kaikia run from the old port to beaches and coves that the road does not reach, and some places — Lalaria and the north coast — can only be reached that way, and only in calm weather.
For a day on the north coast, the boat is not a novelty, it is the transport. Departures go from the old port, which is about thirteen minutes by car from the house, and the trip is subject to the sea being flat enough that morning.
How much of the day does moving around actually take?
From this side of the bay, budget about half an hour of driving for any outing that involves the town, and around an hour for the south-west beaches. That is the tax on the view, and it is worth knowing before you plan a full week.

Method: each figure is a measured one-way time from the door, doubled. Parking, and a different route home, are extra.
None of those numbers is large on its own. Stacked two or three deep in a single day they add up, which is the argument for doing one thing a day properly rather than three things partially. Three or four sharing a Superior Suite, which takes two guests, occasionally up to three, feel it soonest, because everyone has to agree on the one thing.

Is there a bus on Skiathos?
Yes, one route: from Skiathos Town along the south coast to Koukounaries, calling at the beaches on the way. It does not serve the north coast or the Pounta side of the bay.
Do you need to hire a car on Skiathos?
On the south coast bus route, no. Anywhere else, effectively yes. From CORE on the Pounta hillside there is no bus at all, so guests here use a hire car or taxis.
How long does it take to drive across Skiathos?
About half an hour from Skiathos Town to Koukounaries at the south-west end. From CORE, on the far side of the bay, Koukounaries is around 29 minutes by car.
Are taxis easy to find on Skiathos?
In town during the day, yes. At the end of the evening and when a ferry or two flights arrive together, no. Book ahead for anything that matters.
Can you get to the north coast beaches by road?
Some of them, on unsurfaced approaches. Lalaria cannot be reached by road at all — only by boat from the old port, and only when the sea is calm.
