How do you get from Skiathos old port to Core Luxury Suites?

By taxi in about thirteen minutes, or on foot in about forty-one. The road runs 5.0 km around the bay and the airport runway; the footpath cuts across in 2.8 km. With luggage, the taxi is not really a choice.

Both sets of figures come from Google Maps, measured from the property. The apparent contradiction is geography, not an error: the runway occupies a strip of land north-east of the town, and the road has to go round both it and the head of the bay. The path does not.

Can you walk it with a suitcase?

We would not. Forty-one minutes on a hillside path, in summer, with cases and possibly after dark, is a different proposition from the same distance on a pavement. Take a taxi on arrival and walk it later in the week if you want to. That is the advice whichever category you have booked, from a Deluxe Suite for two to four upwards.

Core Luxury Suites does not run or arrange transfers of any kind. Taxis wait at the port and the airport, and the hosts will give you a local number if you ask before you travel. In high season the rank empties quickly when a ferry docks, so it is worth calling ahead.

There is no bus on the Pounta side of the bay. The island bus runs from the town along the south coast to Koukounaries and does not come this way.

What is the walk actually like?

A footpath rather than a pavement, climbing to a hillside above the bay. It is shorter than the road and slower than you expect. Do it in daylight, in shoes rather than sandals, and carrying water rather than luggage.

• Go one way. Walk down into town in the late afternoon and take a taxi back after dinner.
• Not in the middle of the day in July. The climb is exposed and there is no shade to speak of.
• Not after dark on your first night, when you do not yet know the route.

Guests who do walk it tend to do it once, deliberately, for the view back across the water — which is a fair reason. Two of you can do it light and unhurried, which is the kind of week the Classic category, two suites for two guests, is sized for.

What if you are arriving by air rather than by sea?

The airport is closer than the port: about six minutes by car and roughly two kilometres. On foot it is about thirty-four minutes. The same advice applies — take a taxi with luggage, and book it rather than assume it.

Arrivals cluster around a handful of summer flights. Two landing together will clear the taxi rank before the second aircraft has finished disembarking.

How do you find Core Luxury Suites once you are on the Pounta road?

Give the driver Pounta Lazareta rather than a street number. The property is gated, on the hillside above the bay, and the airport is the landmark to steer by: from the terminal it is about six minutes and roughly two kilometres.

The postal address is Pounta Lazareta, 370 02 Skiathos. Island addressing is not house-number based in the way a satnav expects, and the reliable instruction to a driver is the area name plus the property name — both are known locally.

• Arriving by air, you are already on the right side of the bay. Do not let a route take you into town first.
• Arriving by sea, the drive goes around the head of the bay and behind the runway. Thirteen minutes is normal; it is not a wrong turn.

The property sits on a hillside with steps and slopes between its levels. If mobility or heavy luggage is a concern, say so when you book rather than on arrival.
