What is there to see in Skiathos Town?

The old port and the Bourtzi peninsula that divides it from the new one, the lanes behind Papadiamanti street, and five small museums — the writer's house, the maritime collection on Bourtzi, a family house of 1910, a poet's house and the monastery museum.

The Bourtzi is the small wooded peninsula between the two harbours, with a fortress on it from the thirteenth century. The Maritime and Cultural Tradition Museum occupies the building put up there in 1906 as the island's first primary school, and holds over six hundred objects covering two centuries of shipbuilding, including material on the submarine Lambros Katsonis.

A few streets inland, the Papadiamantis House Museum is the two-storey house the novelist's father built in 1860. Alexandros Papadiamantis was born on the island on 4 March 1851; the upper floor keeps the period furnishings, the ground floor shows rare manuscripts, photographs and original editions. It takes half an hour and it is the single best thing in the town.

How do you get to Skiathos Town from Core Luxury Suites?

By car or taxi, in about thirteen minutes to the old port. The road covers 5.0 km; the footpath covers 2.8 km in about 41 minutes. There is no bus on the Pounta side, and the property does not arrange transfers.

How long do you need in Skiathos Town?

An afternoon into an evening. Two hours covers the old port, one museum and the lanes; the town is better after six, when the light drops and the harbour front fills. Most people go twice in a week rather than once for longer.

A workable shape: arrive around five, walk the old port and the historical centre the Bourtzi while it is still light, spend an hour in the Papadiamantis house or the maritime museum, then eat. The streets behind Papadiamanti are where the town stops performing for visitors and starts being a town.

If you want a swim in the same outing, Megali Ammos is about a kilometre from the centre — a fully organised Blue Flag beach with soft sand, reachable on foot from town or twelve minutes by car from Core Luxury Suites. It is the one beach that combines cleanly with a town afternoon.

Parking in town in July and August is the part to plan for, not the driving. Arrive before six or accept a walk in from the edge.

Where do you eat, and what about getting back?

The harbour front is the obvious choice and the busiest; the lanes behind Papadiamanti are quieter and generally better value. From Core Luxury Suites, remember the thirteen minutes home — decide who is driving before the first glass, not after.

Core Luxury Suites has no restaurant, no bar and no breakfast service, so every dinner is a decision about the town. That is not a hardship — it is thirteen minutes each way — but it does mean the evening has a journey at both ends, and taxis on the island get busy at the times everyone wants them.

What does the town look like from the other side of the bay?

A low white line under a hill, with the port lights coming on at dusk and the aircraft dropping in behind it. It is the view from this hillside, and it is the reason the property is where it is rather than in the town itself.
