How to get to Skiathos, and on to Core Luxury Suites.

Two ways on to the island: fly into Skiathos, or take a ferry from Volos, Mantoudi or Thessaloniki. Then about six minutes by car from the airport to Pounta, or thirteen from the old port.

How do you get to Skiathos?

By air into Skiathos International Airport, or by ferry from the mainland. Volos is the main mainland port at about an hour and ten minutes at its shortest, Mantoudi on Evia is the quickest crossing at around forty minutes, and Thessaloniki runs in summer.

From Shortest crossing Note
Mantoudi, Evia About 40 min The quickest mainland crossing
Volos About 1 h 10 min The main mainland port, most sailings
Thessaloniki About 3 h 10 min Seasonal, roughly June to September
Skopelos About 25 min Glossa, on the same island, is about 10 min
Alonissos About 40 min The far end of the Sporades chain

Those are the shortest advertised durations on the Skiathos route pages, checked on 6 September 2026. Real times vary by vessel: a conventional ferry from Volos can take well over two hours where a high-speed craft takes seventy minutes, and the fare difference is the reason why.

Agios Konstantinos appears in a lot of older guidance as a Skiathos port. It did not show sailings to Skiathos when we checked in September 2026. Confirm the port before you book a train or a coach to it.

What should you know about Skiathos airport?

It has a single runway of 1,628 metres by 30, among the shortest in Europe used by scheduled jets, on reclaimed land about two kilometres north-east of the town. It opened in 1972 and has been operated by Fraport Greece since 2017.

Skiathos International Airport — JSI to the airlines, LGSK to the pilots — is named after Alexandros Papadiamantis, the novelist born on the island in 1851. The runway, designated 01/19, sits sixteen metres above the sea on a strip between Skiathos and the islet of Lakonizi, and takes aircraft up to about the size of a Boeing 757-200.

Two practical consequences. Approaches come in low over the water and are visible from most of the bay, which is why the airport has a following among aviation spotters. And the terminal is small: at a summer changeover it fills, so allow more time on departure than the size of the island suggests.

From the airport to Core Luxury Suites is about six minutes by car, roughly two kilometres. Taxis wait at the airport and at the port. Six minutes matters most when you land with children and cases, and the Family Suite, which sleeps four, keeps that party on one booking.

How do you get from the airport or the port to Core Luxury Suites?

By taxi or hire car. The airport is about six minutes away, the old port about thirteen. Core Luxury Suites does not operate or arrange transfers of any kind; the hosts will give you a local taxi number if you ask before you travel.

From By car to Core Luxury Suites On foot
Skiathos Airport 6 min · about 2 km 34 min
The old port 13 min · 5.0 km 41 min · 2.8 km
Papadiamanti street 11–12 min · 5.0 km 44 min · 3.0 km

Book the taxi rather than assuming one. Arrivals cluster around a handful of summer flights, and the rank empties fast when two land together.

There is no bus service on the Pounta side of the bay. Every driving time on this page assumes a car or a taxi, and Core Luxury Suites does not run or arrange transfers of any kind.

Is it better to fly or take the ferry to Skiathos?

Fly if you are coming from outside Greece in summer, when direct charters run. Take the ferry if you are already in Greece, if you want a car on the island, or if you are combining Skiathos with Skopelos and Alonissos in the same trip.

  • Flying puts you six minutes from the door. It also concentrates the whole island's arrivals into a few hours on a few days.
  • The ferry lets you bring a vehicle, which matters more here than on a bus-served island, and it is the only sensible way to island-hop the Sporades.
  • Both are weather-dependent in the shoulder months. Build a spare half-day into an onward connection rather than a tight one.

If you are arriving by ferry with luggage, read the note on the walk up from the port before you decide to carry it. A party of five is in a Signature Suite, the only category that takes five, and five people with luggage is not a walk.

Do you need a car once you have arrived?

On this side of the bay, effectively yes. The island bus runs from Skiathos Town along the south coast to Koukounaries, but it does not serve Pounta. Guests at Core Luxury Suites use a hire car or taxis for every journey.

The island operator runs the south coast route, which is genuinely useful if you are staying on it. From here it is not an option, and we would rather you priced a hire car into the trip than discovered that on day two.

Hire early in July and August. The island's fleet is finite and the good rates go first.

Questions about getting to Skiathos

How long is the ferry from Volos to Skiathos?

The shortest advertised crossing is about 1 hour 10 minutes on a high-speed vessel; conventional ferries take considerably longer, in some cases over two hours. Check the specific sailing rather than the route average.

Which is the quickest ferry to Skiathos?

Mantoudi on Evia, at about 40 minutes at its shortest. It is the least known of the mainland ports and usually the cheapest, but it is a long drive from Athens to reach it.

Is there a ferry from Athens to Skiathos?

Not directly from Piraeus. You travel overland to a Sporades port — Volos or Mantoudi — and sail from there, or you fly. Confirm your chosen port has current sailings before booking the overland leg.

How far is Skiathos airport from the town?

About two kilometres north-east of Skiathos Town. From the airport to CORE, on the Pounta hillside, is about six minutes by car.

Does CORE Luxury Suites offer airport transfers?

No. The property does not run or arrange transfers of any kind. Taxis wait at the airport and the port, and the hosts will share a local taxi number if you ask.

Distances from Core Luxury Suites are approximate, measured on Google Maps from the property. Island facts are linked to their source below. Check transport times, opening hours and sea conditions against the operator for your own dates.
