Mamma Mia filming locations, told apart.

The chapel everybody is looking for is on Skopelos, not Skiathos. Knowing which island holds which location is the difference between a good day and a disappointed one.

Was Mamma Mia filmed on Skiathos or Skopelos?

Mostly Skopelos. The wedding chapel, Agios Ioannis Kastri, is on Skopelos, as are the Kastani and Glysteri beach scenes. Skiathos contributed its old port, and Damouchari on the Pelion mainland provided the harbour village.

Sourced from a Skopelos guide to the filming locations. The island in the film, Kalokairi, does not exist; it is assembled from three real places in two different parts of Greece.

How do you get to the Mamma Mia church from Skiathos?

Sail to Skopelos and go north. The chapel stands about a hundred metres above the sea and is reached by roughly two hundred steps. Landing at Glossa, about ten minutes from Skiathos, puts you at the right end of the island.

The crossing to Skopelos Town is about twenty-five minutes at its shortest and to Glossa about ten. The two ends of Skopelos are roughly an hour apart by road, so the port you choose matters more than the crossing time.

Then the steps. Around two hundred of them, in the open, with no shade at the top and a small chapel that fills quickly when a coach arrives. Go early, and take water.

It is a working church on a rock, not an attraction with a ticket desk. Dress and behave accordingly, and expect it to be closed for services.

What should you ask before booking a Mamma Mia excursion?

Which island it actually visits, which stops are included, how long you get at the chapel, and whether the two hundred steps are part of the itinerary or an optional extra you make on your own time.

  • Which island. Some trips billed as Mamma Mia tours stay on Skiathos and show you the old port.
  • Which stops. Kastani and Glysteri are genuine locations; a general Skopelos cruise is not the same thing.
  • How long ashore. The chapel needs an hour including the climb, more if a coach is ahead of you.
  • The weather clause. Boat trips in the Sporades are cancelled for wind more often than visitors expect.

Is there anything to see on Skiathos itself?

The old port appears in the film, and it is a two-minute walk rather than a day out. If you are not going to Skopelos, treat it as something to notice on an evening in town rather than a reason to build a day.

That is the honest version, and it is worth saying because a good deal of writing about this island implies otherwise. Skiathos is where you sleep and sail from; the film locations are twenty-five minutes away across the water.

From Core Luxury Suites the old port is about thirteen minutes by car, and the ferries leave from there. Two of you can take the first sailing and be back for a terrace supper, which is the kind of day the Deluxe category, three suites for two to four guests, is sized for.

There is no bus service on the Pounta side of the bay. Every driving time on this page assumes a car or a taxi, and Core Luxury Suites does not run or arrange transfers of any kind.

How do you build a whole day around the locations?

Land at Glossa on the first fast sailing, climb to the chapel before the coaches, then take the afternoon slowly — a beach on the way back, or the town if you have crossed to it. The chapel itself is an hour, not a day.

Part of the day Allow
Core Luxury Suites → old port by car 13 min
Crossing to Glossa About 10 min
Glossa → the chapel A short road transfer, then the steps
The chapel, including the climb About an hour
Skopelos Town, if you cross to it About an hour by road from the north end

The mistake to avoid is treating the film locations as a circuit. They are spread across two islands and a stretch of mainland coast, and trying to see them all in one day produces a lot of travelling and very little standing still.

If you have children with you, the two hundred steps and the small chapel at the top are the limiting factor rather than the crossing. Early morning is cooler and emptier, and both matter. A party of five is in a Signature Suite, the only category that takes five, and five people rarely climb at one speed.

Questions about the Mamma Mia locations

Where was Mamma Mia filmed in Greece?

Mainly on Skopelos, in the Sporades — including the clifftop chapel of Agios Ioannis Kastri and the beaches at Kastani and Glysteri. Damouchari on the Pelion mainland played the harbour village, and Skiathos contributed its old port.

Is the Mamma Mia church on Skiathos?

No. Agios Ioannis Kastri is on Skopelos, at the northern end of the island. From Skiathos it is a ferry crossing of about 10 minutes to Glossa or 25 to Skopelos Town, plus a road transfer.

How many steps are there to the Mamma Mia chapel?

Around two hundred, climbing to a chapel roughly 100 metres above the sea. There is no shade on the way up and the summit is small, so early in the day is much better.

Can you visit the Mamma Mia locations in one day from Skiathos?

Yes, if you land at Glossa and go straight there. Landing at Skopelos Town adds about an hour of road each way, which turns a comfortable day into a rushed one.

Which Mamma Mia island is Kalokairi?

Kalokairi is fictional. It was assembled on screen from Skopelos, Skiathos and Damouchari in Pelion, which is why no single island matches the film.

Distances from Core Luxury Suites are approximate, measured on Google Maps from the property. Island facts are linked to their source below. Check transport times, opening hours and sea conditions against the operator for your own dates.
