Where do you eat on Skiathos?

Three places, in practice: the harbour front in Skiathos Town, the lanes behind Papadiamanti street, and the beach tavernas along the south coast. The first is the most convenient, the second is usually better, the third is for lunch.

The historical centre is compact enough that the choice is not really geographic — everything in town is within ten minutes on foot of everything else. The meaningful distinction is between the waterfront, which is where the view and the prices are, and the streets one block back, which is where the locals eat.

On the south coast, Koukounaries and Vromolimnos both have tavernas, restaurants and cafés attached to the beach, which the Municipality lists among their facilities. They are lunch places attached to a beach day rather than destinations you would drive to at nine in the evening.

How do you choose between them?

Start with the kind of evening rather than the menu. A long table by the water, a quiet dinner in a lane, or something short before an early start are three different decisions, and only one of them is improved by a harbour view.

• The harbour front — the view, the passing crowd, and the highest prices on the island. Worth it once.
• Behind Papadiamanti — smaller rooms, shorter menus, and the version of the town that is not performing.
• Beach tavernas — the right lunch after a morning in the water, and a long way home in the dark.

If you want to combine a swim and dinner in one outing, Megali Ammos is about a kilometre from the town centre and twelve minutes by car from Core Luxury Suites, so the beach and the restaurants sit in the same trip.

Is there breakfast at Core Luxury Suites?

No. There is no breakfast service, no restaurant, no bar and no pool at the property. Nothing is served at Core Luxury Suites, and a supermarket run on the first afternoon is what most guests do.

We say this early and often because it is the thing most likely to surprise someone arriving from an OTA listing. It is a house of fourteen suites on a hillside, not a hotel with a dining room. What you get instead is a terrace and the bay in the morning, which is a fair exchange but only if you know about it. That is true of every category, including the two Deluxe suites for two to four guests.

Some booking sites still list an on-site restaurant. There is not one.

Do you need to book a table on Skiathos?

In July and August, for anywhere on the waterfront, yes — and on the day rather than a week out. Outside high summer you can generally walk in. What you should always book is the way home.

The taxi is the constraint, not the table. Everyone leaves the town within the same ninety minutes, and the island's fleet is small. Ask the restaurant to call one when you order dessert, or settle the driver question before you leave the house.

There is no bus service on the Pounta side of the bay. Every driving time on this page assumes a car or a taxi, and Core Luxury Suites does not run or arrange transfers of any kind.

What if you would rather not go out?

Buy in town on the way back from the beach. The suites have what you need to put a simple meal together, the terraces face the water, and on a hillside with a view the argument for driving anywhere at eight o'clock is weaker than it looks.

Most guests settle into a rhythm of three or four evenings out and the rest in. It is a practical response to the geography, and it is also the reason people describe a week here as restful rather than busy. That rhythm suits two people more than a crowd, which is what the Classic category, two suites for two guests, is for.

What else is worth knowing about eating here?

Greek dinner runs late, the tavernas away from the waterfront close earlier than the bars, and everything on this island tapers in October. If you are eating in, shop in town rather than expecting anything near the property.

• Timing. The town fills from about eight. Arriving at seven gets you a table and an empty room.
• Season. Some places shut for the winter well before the weather turns. In October, check rather than assume.
• Self-catering. The supermarkets are in and around the town, which is the same thirteen-minute drive. Do the shop on the way back from somewhere else.
• Beach lunches at the organised south-coast beaches are the easiest meal of the day, and they save you one drive.

None of this is exotic. It is simply the difference between a house on a hillside and a hotel with a dining room, and it is worth planning for rather than discovering.
