What are the best things to do in Skiathos?
Four things carry a week: the south-coast beaches, the old town and its museums, the abandoned medieval town of Kastro in the north, and one day on a boat — either round to Lalaria or across to Skopelos. Everything else is optional.
Skiathos is small enough that a list of twenty attractions is a way of padding an article rather than planning a holiday. The honest version is short, and the skill is in spacing it out so no single day has two long drives in it.
- The beaches. The Municipality maintains a page for each of twenty-six of them. Two or three beach days in a week is a normal rhythm.
- Kastro. The fortified town the islanders moved to around 1360 to escape pirate raids, abandoned again in the nineteenth century.
- The town museums. Five of them, all small, all walkable from the old port.
- A day on the water. Lalaria by kaiki, or the twenty-five minute crossing to Skopelos.
How would you spread that across seven days?
Alternate. Put a long outing next to a short one, keep two days with nothing fixed in them, and do the drives in the morning. From the Pounta hillside every plan involves a car, so back-to-back long days wear thin by Thursday.

This is a shape, not a schedule. The one structural rule worth keeping is the fourth day: an unbooked day in the middle of the week absorbs a windy morning, a late ferry or a change of mind without costing you anything. Families need it most, and the Family Suite, which sleeps four, is where four people rarely agree on a full week of plans.
There is no bus service on the Pounta side of the bay. Every driving time on this page assumes a car or a taxi, and Core Luxury Suites does not run or arrange transfers of any kind.
What is Kastro, and how do you get there?
Kastro is the fortified town on the north coast that the islanders founded around 1360 to escape pirate raids. The Municipality gives two routes: drive to the parking area and walk about half an hour up, or take a kaiki from the old port.
The municipal account describes a rocky peninsula acting as a natural fortress, with heavy walls on the landward side, cannons and crenellations scattered across the site, and a gate built to be defended. What survives is a ruin with a view, not a reconstructed monument, and that is the point of going.
The boat is the better arrival if the sea allows it — the Municipality itself recommends the kaiki for the ride and the view. The walk up from the car park is not long but it is exposed and there is no shade at the top; take water and go early.
On the same side of the island, the Monastery of Evangelistria is the only active monastery on Skiathos and among the oldest in Greece, built by Kollyvades monks from Mount Athos. It sits inland, north-east of town, and combines easily with a morning at Kastro.
What is there to do on Skiathos when the wind gets up?
Go into town. Five museums sit within a few streets of the old port, all small enough to see properly in an hour. The wind that cancels the boat to Lalaria, which sails only in dead calm, leaves the town entirely usable.
The Municipality lists five. The Papadiamantis House Museum occupies the two-storey house the novelist's father built in 1860, with period furnishings above and his published works below. The Maritime and Cultural Tradition Museum is on the Bourtzi peninsula in the building put up in 1906 as the island's first primary school, and holds more than six hundred objects across two centuries of shipbuilding.
Two more are worth knowing about: the Skiathitiko Spiti, a stone family house of 1910 on Polytechniou street with costumes and heirlooms, and the Zisis Oikonomou Museum, opened in 2023 in the poet's house, which presents its material in nine languages with augmented reality.
A windy day is also the day to abandon a boat booking without regret. Lalaria and Kastro by sea both need flat water, and an operator who sails anyway is not doing you a favour.
What is not worth building your week around?
Anything that needs a fixed time and a long drive on the same day. Skiathos rewards a loose plan: the distances are short but the roads are slow, and the one thing that reliably spoils a day here is arriving somewhere in a hurry.
- Two long outings in one day. Koukounaries and Kastro are at opposite ends of a small island and a full day each.
- A boat trip on your last full day. If it is cancelled there is no second chance, and if it runs late you are packing at midnight.
- Dinner reservations before you know the day. From Core Luxury Suites, dinner in town is a thirteen-minute drive each way; decide in the afternoon, not on Monday for Friday.
What is worth building in is the opposite: an evening with nothing after it. The terraces here face the town across the water, and the hour the light goes is the reason most guests give for coming back. Two of the fourteen suites are Signature, the largest category and the only one that sleeps five, and an evening like that is easier when everyone has somewhere to sit.

How many days do you need in Skiathos?
Five to seven. Under four days the travel takes too large a share; beyond ten the island runs out of new things and turns into a place you simply live in for a while, which some people want and should plan for deliberately.
Is Skiathos worth visiting?
For beaches, a walkable old town and easy boat access to the rest of the Sporades, yes. For nightlife-free seclusion or for a large range of cultural sites, other islands do it better. It is a small island that does two or three things very well.
What is Skiathos famous for?
Its beaches — over sixty on 44 kilometres of coast, with Koukounaries the best known — its short, dramatic airport runway, and its role as the gateway to the Sporades. Parts of Mamma Mia were filmed in the region, though most of the famous locations are on Skopelos.
Can you do Skiathos without a car?
From a base on the south coast, yes: the island bus runs from Skiathos Town to Koukounaries. From CORE on the Pounta side there is no bus, so you would depend on taxis, and most guests hire a car.
What is there to do in Skiathos in the evening?
The old port and the streets around Papadiamanti fill up after eight for dinner and drinks. From CORE it is about thirteen minutes by car each way, so plan the return journey as part of the evening.
